This story is about Khawla bint Tha’labah and her husband Aws bin As-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him).
At that time, a pagan custom called “Zihar” was prevalent. If a man said to his wife, “You are to me like the back of my mother,” then as a result, she would become forbidden to him forever, but she would neither remain his wife nor would he divorce her. This was an unjust practice that trapped the woman in an unclear and painful situation.
Khawla’s husband got angry and “confessed” to her. Khawla was very upset and went directly to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to present her case.
She said with great pain that her husband had left her and her children, and was freeing her to remarry.
On the plea of Khawla, some verses of Surah Mujadila were revealed in which “Zihar” was abrogated, and the expiation for performing “Zihar” was also prescribed.
In Surah Mujadila, Muslim husbands and wives are ordered to abandon unnecessary rituals and for this reason, happiness always remains in the married life of husbands and wives.
